Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed his commitment to fostering inclusivity and sustainability as the Philippines prepares to chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026. In a video message following his return to Manila, Marcos emphasized the importance of creating a ‘future-proof’ ASEAN, highlighting the theme ‘Navigate our Future, Together’ for the upcoming summit.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos assured the nation’s readiness to host the ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, aiming to build upon Malaysia’s current focus on inclusivity and sustainability. He noted that discussions during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur revolved around future-proofing the region through economic cooperation and sustainable growth.
The summit provided a platform for Southeast Asian leaders to address geopolitical and economic challenges, including incidents in the West Philippine Sea and the situation in Myanmar. Marcos also acknowledged Timor-Leste’s accession as the 11th member of ASEAN as a significant development for regional unity.
Marcos highlighted initiatives to support Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN and stressed the importance of enhancing the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement and Free Trade Agreements. He believes these efforts will boost business confidence and maintain ASEAN’s role in regional and global economic growth.
The President reiterated the Philippines’ dedication to partnerships that promote peace, stability, and economic progress. He also underscored the importance of strengthening the social-cultural community by addressing environmental issues, climate change, education, green jobs, and health.
