PBBM Advocates Waste-to-Energy Program Amid Waterway Blockages

Las pi±as city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced the government's commitment to advancing its waste-to-energy program to tackle garbage accumulation in waterways and alleviate flooding. The announcement came following Marcos's inspection of a high-vacuum self-priming drainage trailer pump in Barangay Zapote, Las Pi±as City, amidst severe weather conditions caused by two tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon in Luzon.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos highlighted the issue of garbage accumulation in nearby Para±aque City, exacerbated by floodwaters opening drainage channels and high tides trapping waste. He emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal by local government units and the public, cautioning that improper waste management could exacerbate flooding and lead to significant damage.

The President reaffirmed the government's commitment to the waste-to-energy program, which converts garbage into electricity. He noted that the technology for waste-to-energy is already established, indicating its potential as a long-term solution to the nation's waste challenges. This initiative is part of a broader effort, including flood-control measures under the administration's Oplan Kontra Baha, aimed at dredging waterways and completing necessary infrastructure.

During the inspection in Las Pi±as, Marcos was joined by Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority General Manager Nicolas Torre III, and other local officials.
