Libjo: The Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga) announced the commencement of the PHP155-million farm-to-market road project in Libjo, Dinagat Islands, aimed at boosting cassava production in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the construction began on Tuesday and is anticipated to directly benefit 2,866 individuals, or 347 households, involved in cassava farming in Sitios Patag and Dela Concepcion of Barangays Garcia and Sto. Nino. The project is part of the agency's Philippine Rural Development Project under the Scale-Up program.
Barangay Captain Vicente Rondina of Garcia expressed support for the project, emphasizing that it will address the challenges faced by farmers and communities in Libjo. The road is expected to reduce transportation costs for farm products, particularly cassava.
Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. highlighted the road's significance, describing it as a crucial development for cassava farmers. He noted that improved access to markets will reduce transport costs, decrease post-harvest losses, and create opportunities for higher income. The enhanced efficiency in reaching buyers and processors is expected to bolster the province's local agricultural economy.
The farm-to-market road project is slated for completion by February 2027.
