Manila: The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) on Monday urged Filipinos to take inspiration from the patriotism and selflessness exhibited by the country’s past and present-day heroes. “May this day be a time of deep reflection on the impact of their heroism on our lives and our nation, and inspire us to be patriots in the truest sense,” OPAPRU chief, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., conveyed in his National Heroes’ Day message.
According to Philippines News Agency, Galvez emphasized the pivotal role that the sacrifices of past heroes played in freeing the Philippines from colonization. He also acknowledged the contributions of modern-day heroes who serve the nation with dedication. “On this day, let us also recognize our modern-day heroes who wholeheartedly serve the country through their service and sacrifices – from our security forces who protect our nation’s peace internally and externally, healthcare professionals who heal and save lives, educators who dedicate their lives to teaching our youth, and peace workers who champion peace and inclusive development in conflict-affected communities,” he stated.
Galvez highlighted that what sets these individuals apart is their selflessness, bravery, and unyielding spirit, enabling them to overcome obstacles for a greater purpose. “May the past and present heroes of our nation continuously inspire all of us to do what we can to make a difference in our families, organizations, and communities. Heroism is not only defined by the strong and valiant individuals enshrined in our history books. It is an ideal and legacy that is deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of each and every Filipino,” he added.
Additionally, Galvez reiterated OPAPRU’s commitment to implementing the nation’s peace process, aiming to improve the lives of former combatants, their families, and communities. The office is dedicated to serving marginalized communities affected by conflict and establishing a just and lasting peace for all.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) also participated in the observance, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for freedom, peace, and dignity. “For the PNP, this day is also a reminder that heroism lives on in quiet, everyday acts of service. It is in the police officer who responds first in times of danger, the rescuer who braves floods to save lives, and the law enforcer who stands firm against crime despite the risks,” it stated.
