Teodoro: The Philippines will not alter its position on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) despite reports of increased Chinese presence in the area, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Monday, stressing that any shift would be ‘to the great detriment of our national interest.’
According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro emphasized during the National Heroes Day rites at the Libingan ng mga Bayani that changing the country’s stance would conflict with the Constitution and the nation’s moral obligations. He underscored the government’s responsibility to uphold its commitment to the Filipino people.
Teodoro highlighted that the government’s firm stance aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s assurance that the country would never compromise its sovereignty, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He noted that many countries support the Philippines because of shared interests grounded in international law and UNCLOS.
The defense secretary confirmed that the Armed Forces of the Philippines has noted an increased Chinese presence not only in Ayungin Shoal but also in other parts of the WPS. However, he remarked that such activities are not uncommon.
Teodoro also cautioned against disinformation, referencing false claims such as the alleged towing of the BRP Sierra Madre from Ayungin and online posts suggesting that Batanes is part of China. He urged vigilance against fake news, which he said is prevalent.
Regarding the safety of Filipino troops stationed aboard the BRP Sierra Madre, Teodoro reassured that they remain secure but on constant alert, emphasizing the importance of vigilance given the unpredictability of potential threats.
The Philippines has steadfastly asserted its sovereign rights over Ayungin Shoal and the broader WPS, relying on the 2016 Arbitral Award that invalidated China’s extensive nine-dash line claim over the South China Sea.
