Manila: Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families will be given free access to selected heritage sites in Intramuros, offering returning workers a cultural homecoming experience in the historic walled city, ahead of the Migrant Workers Month celebration in June.
According to Philippines News Agency, DMW Undersecretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay announced the initiative, 'Pasyal Pamilya: Balik-Bayani sa Walled City,' in collaboration with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Intramuros Administration. The program will run until May 31 and aims to reconnect OFWs with Philippine heritage as the government acknowledges their contributions to the national economy.
The initiative allows OFWs and their families to enter Fort Santiago and the Centro de Turismo Intramuros free of charge by presenting a valid Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) ID or Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC). Each OFW can bring up to four companions, with guided tours available daily in the afternoon.
DMW Undersecretary Felicitas Bay highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that it reflects the government's recognition of the sacrifices and contributions of migrant workers. She described it as more than just a free guided tour but a way to show OFWs that their efforts are valued and recognized.
Bay elaborated that the initiative supports the broader goal of reintegration, emphasizing the importance of making OFWs feel recognized, supported, and connected to their communities. Reintegration, she stressed, involves more than just employment support.
The DMW expressed gratitude to the DOT and Intramuros Administration for their cooperation in honoring modern-day heroes through a whole-of-government approach. Bay emphasized that reintegration is about belonging and ensuring that OFWs always feel at home in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Rubia-Tutay mentioned a full calendar of events in June to honor Filipino migrant workers and their families. The Indicative Calendar of Activities for Migrant Workers Month 2026 outlines the celebration's official opening on June 1, followed by the Global Migration Summit on June 7 and other nationwide activities.
