Northern Samar Achieves Zero Casualties During Super Typhoon Uwan

Northern samar: The Northern Samar provincial government reported zero casualties after Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) unleashed its wrath on Sunday, with nearly 18 hours of fierce winds and heavy rains. All local government units confirmed no deaths despite the extensive impact of the typhoon, based on reports submitted to the Northern Samar Emergency Operations Center on Sunday night.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) highlighted the effectiveness of timely preemptive evacuation efforts for 45,706 individuals before Uwan’s landfall. This proactive measure played a crucial role in achieving the zero-casualty goal.

‘As the typhoon moves away from our province, we are grateful that no lives were lost. We stand in solidarity and prayer for the rest of the country that may still face the impact of Super Typhoon Uwan,’ said Northern Samar PDRRMO chief Rei Josiah Echano, in a statement Monday. Echano commended the active participation of local DRRM officers, local governments, and other stakeholders for their swift coordination and collective efforts during the emergency operations.

The provincial government lauded the cooperation between national and local agencies, uniformed personnel, volunteers, and communities that ensured an effective implementation of early warning systems, evacuation protocols, and relief operations. Super Typhoon Uwan was one of the strongest tropical cyclones to hit the region this year, prompting widespread precautionary measures across Eastern Visayas.

The provincial government continues to assess the extent of damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and public utilities as part of the post-disaster response.
