NorMin Preemptive Measures in Place for Typhoon Tino

Cagayan de oro: Local governments and agencies in Northern Mindanao initiated preemptive measures Monday as Typhoon Tino approached the region. All local government units (LGUs) suspended classes and work, some as early as Sunday. Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 and yellow rainfall warning were raised in Misamis Oriental as of the 7 p.m. advisory.

According to Philippines News Agency, in Gingoog City, Mayor Erick Ca±osa ordered the prepositioning of makeshift shelters in the public gymnasium for families in flood-prone areas. “We have visited all evacuation centers to ensure all are ready and prepared for receiving possible evacuees,” he said in a statement Monday.

In Tagoloan, LGUs prepared relief packs to complement supplies from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, led by the Office of Civil Defense, is coordinating with LGUs to monitor river levels and coastal communities.

The Department of Public Works and Highways and the National Irrigation Authority have dispatched personnel to monitor infrastructure, particularly in Bukidnon where a landslide hit a major road on Oct. 18, killing a couple. As of the 8 p.m. bulletin, the center of the eye of Typhoon Tino was estimated based on all available data at 95 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
