Manila: All power grids across the country are under normal conditions, but the risk of a yellow alert remains should another major power plant outage occur, the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said.
According to Philippines News Agency, the grid operator issued an advisory on Thursday morning indicating that conditions in the Visayas grid have improved following the return to service of Unit 2 of Kepco SPC Power Corp., combined with lower projected demand in the region. Despite these improvements, the NGCP warned that a major plant outage could still trigger a yellow alert.
As of 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Visayas grid had an available capacity of about 2,741 megawatts (MW), while peak demand was projected at 2,362 MW. The region has faced a series of power alerts, experiencing 17 yellow alerts and four red alerts since May 12.
The current situation is compounded by the fact that more than 20 power plants are on forced outage, including significant coal-fired generating units like Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas, Inc., and Unit 3 of Panay Energy Development Corp.
