BICOL: The New Year festivities in the Bicol region concluded with minimal firecracker-related injuries and no significant incidents, attributing the peaceful celebrations to a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the local community. The Police Regional Office in Bicol (PRO-5) reported an effective execution of security measures that ensured public safety during the holiday period.

According to Philippines News Agency, PRO-5 Director Brig. Gen. Andre Dizon highlighted the proactive steps taken by the community and law enforcement as a key factor in the successful management of the celebrations. Dizon emphasized that the heightened alert status of Bicol police, combined with the deployment of additional officers, increased patrolling, and enhanced visibility in public spaces, played a crucial role in maintaining order.

The region reported only 30 injuries related to firecracker use, a number that reflects the efficacy of the preventive measures. Albay province saw the highest number of incidents, with 12 reported cases, while Camarines Norte recorded 9, Camarines Sur had 7, and both Masbate and Naga City reported one incident each.

Dizon also noted the success of a region-wide crackdown on illegal firecrackers, which resulted in the confiscation of 1,657 improvised “boga” and 3,433 other unauthorized firecrackers. This operation was aimed at preventing potential injuries and encouraging the use of safe and legal alternatives for celebrations. Furthermore, the Bicol police confirmed there were no fire incidents, casualties from stray bullets, or illegal firearm discharges during the New Year celebrations.

In his statement, Dizon expressed gratitude towards the public, local government units, and community stakeholders for their cooperation and support, which were instrumental in ensuring a peaceful and safe holiday period.
