Piddig: The local government unit of Piddig has reminded the public that Mount Lammin remains closed to visitors as a precaution against grass fires. In a public advisory posted on social media, Piddig Mayor Georgina Guillen stated that the temporary closure of Mount Lammin is still in effect to prevent potential grass fires that could cause damage to the area.
According to Philippine News Agency, the restriction, which began on January 13, 2025, has not yet been lifted. Mount Lammin, located in Barangays Estancia and Dupitac, has become increasingly popular among young adventurers due to its cool climate and improved access road to a large coffee plantation, a national convergence project in the Ilocos Region. Mayor Guillen emphasized the importance of the closure as a preventive measure to protect the environment and ensure the safety of wildlife and the local community.
Authorities have noted that the Bureau of Fire Protection has acknowledged its limitations in combating forest fires, leading local government units in fire-prone areas to implement proactive measures. Despite the closure order, authorities observed that numerous visitors still accessed the area during recent long holidays, leaving behind piles of trash, including single-use plastic bottles and food containers, with some even camping overnight.
Personnel from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office and the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist expressed disappointment after collecting garbage left by irresponsible visitors. Local officials have reiterated that checkpoints will remain in place to strictly monitor entry, preserve cleanliness, and prevent fire incidents.
