Manila:Two bus drivers tested positive for illegal drugs during the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) random drug testing and safety inspections ahead of the Undas travel rush.
According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative was conducted in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance security and ensure the safety and convenience of travelers during the annual observance of All Saints' and All Souls' Days.
A total of 118 drivers were tested across major terminals. At the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), 32 drivers were tested, with 31 yielding negative results and one testing positive. Similarly, in a separate test at three bus terminals in Cubao, 86 drivers were tested, with 85 testing negative and one testing positive.
The drivers who tested positive will undergo confirmatory testing. As a precautionary measure, they were temporarily placed on hold and prohibited from driving until confirmation. The confirmatory testing process involves gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify the specific substance detected in the initial screening. If the test does not detect any prohibited drug, the driver's license will be returned.
LTO chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao explained that if the confirmatory test confirms the presence of prohibited drugs, the driver's license would be revoked in accordance with applicable regulations. In addition to the drug testing, authorities inspected the availability and condition of fire extinguishers and emergency equipment, including early warning devices, to ensure buses are properly equipped to respond to emergencies.
The operations were conducted by the MMDA Medical Clinic, headed by Dr. Annabelle Ombina, in coordination with the Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Philippine National Police - Highway Patrol Group, and PDEA.
