Baguio city: The city government will intensify implementation of the Sanitation Code in businesses, particularly those involved in food preparation, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said Thursday, warning that establishments found with sanitation issues face closure. "We will do spot inspections and ensure that those found to have sanitation issues will comply with the recommendations, otherwise we order their closure," Magalong said.
According to Philippines News Agency, the sanitation division of the City Health Services Office, together with the Public Order and Safety Division, has been conducting inspections to check compliance with business permits, sanitation permits, cleanliness of toilets, kitchens, dining areas, and the non-smoking ordinance. The effort comes in response to a viral video showing a rodent in food, which led to the closure of the implicated establishment.
Last week, a video of a restaurant at the central business district where a customer scooped a rodent from a soup pot went viral, alarming the city government and the public. Mayor Magalong has since ordered more frequent unannounced inspections to ensure cleaning becomes part of regular maintenance.
In the last quarter of 2025, the mayor ordered all business establishments to fully comply with sanitation laws, particularly in providing well-maintained restrooms and handwashing facilities. Earlier discovered violations included unsanitary food preparation areas, absent or unmaintained grease traps, improper waste disposal, food handlers not wearing personal protective equipment, failed rapid water tests, presence of rodents or vermin, and lack of valid health certificates. Some establishments also had unsanitary and odorous restrooms without handwashing facilities and covered trash bins.
"Mahiya naman kayo, ayusin niyo ang mga establishment niyo dahil kung hindi, isasara na kayo (Be ashamed and fix your establishments because if you don't, we will close you down)," Magalong warned.
