QUEZON CITY: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has urged local government units (LGUs) to intensify their efforts against illegal Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs), emphasizing the importance of vigilance and collective action. Speaking at the 2nd Joint National Peace and Order Council-Regional Peace and Order Councils meeting at Camp Crame, Marcos outlined the need for coordinated efforts to address the myriad issues associated with POGOs.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos has instructed law enforcement agencies, including PAGCOR, PAOCC, PNP, and CIDG, to ramp up their operations against illegal POGO and internet gaming licensees. He also called on LGUs to actively monitor and report suspicious activities within their jurisdictions, encouraging collaboration with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Marcos’s directive follows his announcement during his State of the Nation Address in July, where he declared a ban on all POGO operations, citing concerns
over human trafficking, prostitution, abduction, and murder related to the industry. DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla has also pledged to issue a memorandum requiring local leaders to report any suspicious POGO-related activities.
Further reinforcing the government’s stance, Remulla stated that law enforcement agencies, with support from the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission and LGUs, will continue to dismantle POGO operations even after the scheduled closure of remaining establishments on December 15. He expressed confidence that by 2025, the Philippines will be free of POGOs, adhering to the President’s directive to cancel all licenses.
PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil assured President Marcos of the police force’s dedication to supporting the administration’s initiatives. During a command conference, Marcos highlighted the necessity for the PNP to remain proactive, particularly in addressing cybercrime through advanced training and equipping officers to combat digital threats effectively.
The President also underscored the importance of prioritizing the protection of children from exploitation and maintaining public safety during the upcoming holiday season. Additionally, he called for continued collaboration among government agencies to enhance anti-drug operations, stressing the need for a comprehensive approach to this enduring issue.
