Malolos Commemorates 127th Anniversary of First Philippine Republic

Malolos: The 127th anniversary of the First Philippine Republic was commemorated at the historic Barasoain Church here. It was at Barasoain Church where the Malolos Constitution was drafted and the First Philippine Republic was inaugurated in 1899. The event included a flag-raising ceremony, an oath to the flag, and a wreath-laying at the monument of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the first Philippine president.

According to Philippines News Agency, officials of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, led by Executive Director Carminda Arevalo, unveiled the marker 'Kapitolyo ng Bulacan' (Capitol of Bulacan) at the provincial building. San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, national president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, was the guest of honor and joined Governor Daniel Fernando and Malolos City Mayor Christian Natividad in the ceremonies.

In his speech, Zamora noted historical parallels between San Juan in the National Capital Region and Malolos. 'Nakakatuwang isipin na ang Malolos at San Juan ay may malinaw na pagkakatulad. Kapwa naging saksi ang ating mga lungsod sa mahahalagang yugto ng kasaysayan ng ating bayan (It's heartwarming to think that Malolos and San Juan have a clear similarity. Both our cities have been witnesses to important chapters in our nation's history),' Zamora said. San Juan City is the site of the first battle of the 1896 Philippine revolution (Battle of Pinaglabanan) against Spain.

Fernando called for unity among Bulakenyos to preserve the province's dignity. 'Ako ay paulit-ulit na nananawagan ng magbuklod po tayo. Maging tinig ng katotohanan, ipaglaban ang tama, panatilihin ang dignidad bilang mga Bulakenyo at Pilipino (I am repeatedly calling for us to unite. Be the voice of truth, fight for what is right, maintain our dignity as Bulakenyos and Filipinos),' the governor said.
