Malaysia Boasts Cheapest Internet Rates and Fastest 5G in Southeast Asia

Baku: Malaysia has emerged as one of the global leaders in affordable internet connectivity, offering some of the lowest internet rates per gigabyte, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He highlighted that this achievement is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to provide inclusive digital connectivity for its citizens.

According to Philippines News Agency, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized that Malaysia has also rapidly deployed its 5G network, securing the title of the fastest 5G network in Southeast Asia and the second fastest in the Asia-Pacific region, trailing only South Korea. The cost of internet in Malaysia stands at approximately 2 cents per gigabyte, placing it among the top ten countries for affordable internet.

During a reception with the Malaysian diaspora at Rumah Malaysia, the minister noted a newfound consensus among Malaysian telecommunications companies, which he credited for the country’s progress in digital connectivity. The event coincided with his visit to Baku from November 16 to 19, where he led the Malaysian delegation at the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025 (WTDC-25).

Fahmi’s participation in the conference is aligned with Malaysia’s objective to maintain its seat on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the 2027-2030 term, following the country’s candidacy announcement in July. He also updated attendees on Malaysia’s successful hosting of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in October, showcasing the nation’s diplomatic prowess.

The event saw the attendance of Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini, Senior Advisor of International Affairs of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and Ahmad Kamrizamil Mohd Riza, the Malaysian Ambassador to Azerbaijan. Ahmad Kamrizamil underscored the significance of Fahmi’s participation in strengthening Malaysia-Azerbaijan bilateral relations, particularly in communication, technology, and digital sectors.

Kelvin Chong, a long-time Malaysian resident in Azerbaijan and founder of the Culinary Arts Centre of Azerbaijan, expressed enthusiasm about the minister’s visit and the updates shared about Malaysia’s developments. He encouraged more Malaysians to explore Azerbaijan, appreciating the country’s beauty and culture.
