Manila: Malaca±ang on Thursday called on local candidates in the upcoming May 12 elections to be ‘calm’ and ensure ‘orderly’ campaigning. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro made the call, ahead of the start of the campaign period for local bets on March 28.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castro stated in a press briefing that the Palace is expecting a ‘credible’ 2025 election, noting a decline in the number of areas facing poll-related threats. Castro emphasized the need for cooperation among all agencies to ensure a credible election in May 2025.
She urged candidates to remain calm and orderly during their campaigns and to be truthful in their statements. Castro cautioned against making statements that could incite chaos, stressing the importance of maintaining peace during the election period.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported a decrease in the number of areas under the red category, indicating serious threats of election-related violence. The number has dropped from 38 to 36, with affected areas primarily in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and a few in Negros Island Region, Northern Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, Bicol Region, and Cagayan Valley.
Despite the decline, Comelec anticipates a potential increase in election-related incidents once the campaign period for local candidates begins.
