Zamboanga del Norte: A magnitude 5.4 earthquake that is tectonic in origin shook Zamboanga del Norte on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The quake, initially reported by Phivolcs as magnitude 6.1, struck 5 kilometers southeast of Siocon at 11:41 a.m., with a depth of 43 kilometers.
According to Philippines News Agency, Intensity V was felt in Siocon; Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay; and Isabela City. Intensity IV was registered in Zamboanga City; Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte; Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur; and Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay. Intensity III was reported in the City of Dipolog and President Manuel A. Roxas, Zamboanga del Norte; as well as Buug and Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay. Intensity II was noted in San Jose, Antique; the City of Himamaylan, Negros Occidental; Molave, Zamboanga del Sur; and Intensity I in the City of Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.
Phivolcs also recorded instrumental Intensity IV in Zamboanga City. Reported intensity is determined based on eyewitness accounts, whereas instrumental intensity is gauged using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration. Phivolcs has stated that damage is not expected, though aftershocks remain a possibility.
Earlier in the day, a 5.8 magnitude quake struck Southern Leyte. This tectonic event occurred 10.01 kilometers southeast of the municipality of San Francisco at 7:39 a.m.
