Magalong Aims for Sustainable Baguio by 2043

Baguio: Mayor Benjamin Magalong, in his State of the City Address (SOCA) on Tuesday, emphasized his focus on making Baguio sustainable by 2043 through various programs, projects, and activities aimed at enhancing the city.

According to Philippines News Agency, Magalong stressed the importance of institutionalizing programs and projects that transcend political figures, integrating them into the city's core to ensure sustainability. His remarks came during the 117th Baguio Charter Day anniversary, where he outlined a seven-point core agenda guiding decision-making and resource allocation for a livable, inclusive, and creative Baguio.

Magalong highlighted the city's efforts in waste management, noting the significant financial burden of PHP200 million to PHP250 million annually for waste disposal. He introduced the Pansa-nopen Tayo program, aimed at altering public attitudes towards waste by promoting recycling and repurposing as economic opportunities.

The mayor also mentioned collaborations with foreign organizations to enhance the circular economy, currently piloted in six barangays. A quarterly "sustainability fair" is planned to encourage responsible e-waste disposal.

Addressing water scarcity, Magalong discussed a bulk water project backed by a feasibility study, projected to meet future needs. The city government is pursuing ISO 37001 certification for anti-bribery management and is training youth leaders as per Resolution 695, series of 2026.

Financially, the city is on track with revenue collection to support its growing budget, which increased from PHP2.63 billion in 2019 to PHP3.65 billion projected for 2026, with a 62 percent utilization rate as of August.

Magalong also proposed a merit-based hiring system for local government workers to ensure fair employment practices and reduce political indebtedness. He emphasized fostering creativity to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and cultural development, enabling the city to adapt and thrive continuously.
