Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued show cause orders against the driver and registered owner of a sports car, as well as its LTO-accredited importer, following the discovery of irregularities in the vehicle's registration.

According to Philippines News Agency, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao announced that the respondents are required to appear before the Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) of the LTO Central Office on September 8 to provide their sworn statements and supporting documents. The driver and owner must address allegations related to 'Imitation and False Interpretation,' and justify why the driver's license should not be revoked for being an 'Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle.'

The importer is also required to explain why it should not be held accountable under Memorandum Circular No. AVT 2014-023, specifically concerning the 'Commission of Fraud and Misinterpretation in the Filing of Application and its Operations,' including issues related to 'Stocks and Sales Reporting.'

As a precaution, the driver has been ordered to surrender his license to the IID, facing a 90-day preventive suspension during the investigation. Additionally, the LTO has mandated the surrender of the sports car for verification and further investigation.

"Our position is simple - documents must be correct, registration must be correct, and the process must be correct," Lacanilao stated, emphasizing the importance of accurate documentation and registration. He also urged motorists to be discerning when purchasing vehicles and warned dealers against fraudulent practices.

Lacanilao further advised, "To motorists, be discerning about the vehicles we buy. To dealers, do not deceive our countrymen. If something is wrong, let us correct it and not participate in any kind of fraud."

The LTO will continue to intensify efforts in monitoring, validating, and enforcing motor vehicle registration regulations to ensure a more orderly, transparent, and accountable system. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity or irregularity to the LTO for appropriate action and investigation.
