LTFRB Summons Operators of Dilapidated Jeepneys in QC Amid Road Safety Crackdown

Quezon city: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned several operators who owned dilapidated jeepneys found during an inspection in Quezon City on Tuesday. In a statement on Wednesday, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II announced that show cause orders (SCO) have been issued against the operators of at least 10 passenger jeepneys as part of a crackdown against dilapidated public utility vehicles (PUV).

According to Philippines News Agency, the operation aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure road safety and prioritize commuter welfare. "This should serve as a strong message that we are serious and committed to a drastic change when we in the LTFRB declared that we will run after run-down PUVs and bus and PUV terminals with dilapidated facilities," Mendoza stated.

The dilapidated passenger jeepneys were discovered by LTFRB inspectors parked along major thoroughfares such as West Avenue, Fernando Poe Jr. Avenue, and Roosevelt Avenue. Mendoza highlighted that parking on these roads indicated the absence of a designated garage for the jeepneys, which violates LTFRB Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 2017-027.

During the inspection, PUV drivers not in proper uniform were also corrected and reminded about the policy on wearing presentable clothing. Additionally, a separate inspection team was dispatched to the Eton Centris Mall in Quezon City, where the PUV terminal operator was advised to enhance their facilities.

Furthermore, the inspection revealed PUV units with defective brake lights, worn-out cushion seats, and damaged ceilings. So far, LTFRB's campaign against dilapidated PUVs and terminals has resulted in the issuance of SCOs and notice of violations to at least 87 bus and PUV terminals nationwide.
