Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has summoned the operator of a passenger jeepney that crashed and tipped over in Sta. Cruz, Manila, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old woman and injuries to eight others.

According to Philippines News Agency, Acting LTFRB Chair Greg Pua Jr. announced the agency's intention to conduct a separate investigation into the operator's administrative liability. Pua assured the victims' families of the insurance payments they would receive, emphasizing the LTFRB's commitment to ensuring justice. "We in the LTFRB extend our sincerest sympathies to the family of the deceased. We assure them that we will do everything in our power and within the bounds of law to ensure that justice is served," Pua stated.

The initial police investigation revealed that the passenger jeepney was traveling along the northbound lane of Rizal Avenue when it crashed near the LRT R. Papa Station on Saturday. The driver claimed the jeepney lost its brakes, a claim that investigators are set to verify. Part of the investigation will determine if the driver was under the influence of any substance, as well as assess whether the jeepney was properly maintained. The LTFRB is currently seeking the unit's maintenance records.

Pua mentioned that insurance payments of PHP400,000 will be made to the deceased's family and PHP100,000 to each injured victim. The operator faces charges for failing to provide safe transportation and for hiring a reckless driver.

The Manila Police District is also preparing criminal charges against the driver involved in the incident. A hearing for the case is scheduled for Oct. 8, where the operator will need to explain why its franchise should not be suspended or revoked due to the incident.
