Manila: As the Philippines observes National Zero Waste Month this January, Senator Loren Legarda stood firm in her call for a stronger national resolve to confront the country's mounting waste crisis, warning that the window to prevent irreversible harm to the environment and public health is rapidly closing.
According to Philippine News Agency, Legarda emphasized the need for deeper reforms and collective action, despite growing awareness and flourishing community initiatives. She described the Zero Waste initiative as a national imperative, urging every Filipino and institution to actively participate in safeguarding the environment and future generations.
The urgency of Legarda's call is underscored by alarming data from the World Bank's 2025 What a Waste global database report, which places the Philippines 27th among 50 countries generating the most municipal solid waste, with an annual figure of 14.6 million tons. A significant portion of this waste is plastic, posing threats to public health, urban resilience, and the country's climate adaptation efforts.
Legarda highlighted the direct impact of mismanaged waste on flooding and disaster vulnerability. In July 2025, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) collected over 600 tons of garbage in Metro Manila during heavy monsoon rains, with authorities confirming that improper waste disposal exacerbated flooding in the area.
Legarda stressed that flooding is not solely caused by rainfall but is aggravated by garbage clogging rivers and esteros. She called for stronger waste discipline as a collective safeguard against such hazards, emphasizing that every piece of trash can endanger lives.
As the nation marks Zero Waste Month 2026, Legarda reiterated her commitment to advancing reforms that enhance producer responsibility, empower communities, and provide institutional support for waste workers. She urged for decisive action and measurable results, asserting that Zero Waste is not merely an aspiration but a duty to the country and future generations.
