Japan: Japan has lodged a formal protest with China regarding its gas-field drilling activities near the median line in the East China Sea, as stated by Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara on Wednesday. The protest was issued after Japan discovered a mobile drilling vessel positioned on the Chinese side of the median line, which separates the exclusive economic zones claimed by both nations.
According to Philippines News Agency, Kihara addressed the press, emphasizing the need for an early resumption of talks concerning joint resource development between Japan and China. The ongoing drilling activities have prompted the Japan Coast Guard to issue a navigational warning on Monday for vessels operating in the area.
The drilling activity by China is not unprecedented, with similar operations being confirmed earlier in January. Kihara expressed Japan's dissatisfaction, stating, "It is extremely regrettable that, despite repeated protests, China has continued unilateral development and attempts to create a fait accompli."
Japan continues to urge China to cease these activities and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the issue amicably.
