Influenza-Like Illnesses in Ilocos Region Decrease by 29%

Baghdad:Ilocos Region The Department of Health (DOH) - Ilocos Region has reported a significant reduction in influenza-like illnesses, with a total of 6,588 cases recorded from January 4 to October 10 this year. This marks a 29 percent decrease compared to the 9,282 cases registered during the same period last year.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Rheuel Bobis, a medical officer from DOH-Ilocos Region, credited the reduction to a comprehensive information campaign and an active anti-flu vaccination initiative targeting vulnerable sectors.

Bobis emphasized the importance of providing flu vaccines to seniors aged 60 and above through local government units, noting the priority due to limited vaccine supplies. The DOH supplies these vaccines to provincial and municipal health offices, urging the elderly to visit regional health offices or centers to receive their annual flu shot, especially during the flu season.

Influenza-like illnesses, while generally self-limiting, can pose life-threatening complications for vulnerable groups, including those with comorbidities, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Bobis highlighted the need to focus on vaccinating these populations to offer them enhanced protection.

Despite the decrease in cases, residents are advised to remain cautious due to the anticipated surge in illnesses with changes in weather. Bobis noted that weather changes can weaken immunity, increasing susceptibility to viruses or bacteria causing influenza-like illnesses. Symptoms typically include cough, runny nose, and sore throat, with fever and body aches warranting monitoring.

Preventative measures such as regular handwashing and wearing face masks, particularly for individuals with comorbidities, weakened immune systems, and the elderly, are strongly recommended to minimize exposure to bacteria and viruses.
