Ilocos norte: The province of Ilocos Norte recently recognized its over 83,000 senior citizens for their legacy and contributions to nation-building, committing to their inclusion in various programs and activities of the local government.
According to Philippines News Agency, hundreds of senior citizens gathered at the Laoag City Centennial Arena as part of the Elderly Week celebration. The event featured entertainment, a showcase of talents, and the grand coronation of the 2025 Gwapong Lolo and Gandang Lola, complete with a royal court, escorts, and muses. Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos addressed the attendees, whom she affectionately called her ‘dabarkads,’ expressing gratitude for their active participation. The theme for the celebration was ‘Embracing Age: Living a Life with Dignity and Purpose.’
Governor Araneta-Marcos reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to upholding the welfare, dignity, and active participation of the elderly in various programs. The Elderly Filipino Week is an annual celebration established by Proclamation No. 470, signed on September 26, 1994, by then-President Fidel V. Ramos.
In addition to receiving a monthly social pension, indigent senior citizens in Ilocos Norte benefit from medical and burial assistance through Provincial Ordinance No. 2018-10-063. The ordinance ensures qualified beneficiaries receive a minimum of PHP5,000 in the event of death and PHP3,000 for medical expenses.
The province is also exploring opportunities for interested senior citizens to work as museum guides in government-managed museums, allowing them to share their expertise in history and culture. Furthermore, the National Commission on Senior Citizens provides various service caravans to the elderly, offering medical consultations, vaccinations, wellness activities, livelihood assistance, legal counseling, recreational opportunities, and disaster preparedness training, among other services.
