Manila: The House of Representatives is “on the right side of history” as it continues its investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings linked to the previous administration’s drug war and illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). During the resumption of the session, Speaker Martin Romualdez emphasized the chamber’s commitment to pursuing the quad committee’s investigation despite any opposition, with the aim of uncovering the truth regarding these issues.

According to Philippines News Agency, Romualdez addressed attempts to halt the search for truth and justice, asserting that such efforts would not succeed. He stated that the House would remain resolute, not yielding to intimidation or pressure, and would not be swayed by attacks. Instead, the chamber is determined to continue its work with greater resolve, buoyed by the support of the people and guided by justice and integrity.

Romualdez highlighted that the quad committee handling the probe has faced attempts to undermine its pursuit o
f accountability. He described the committee as being targeted by those who prefer to operate in secrecy, seeking to discredit its efforts through false narratives. Despite these challenges, Romualdez affirmed that the investigation is both difficult and necessary.

To address gaps in existing laws revealed by the ongoing investigation, House leaders have proposed two bills: House Bill No. 10986, the Anti-Extrajudicial Killing Act, which seeks to classify EJKs as heinous crimes, and House Bill No. 10987, the Anti-Offshore Gaming Operations Act, aimed at banning all forms of offshore gaming.

Romualdez also acknowledged the recent submission of documents and a partial report to the Office of the Solicitor General to investigate Chinese nationals who illegally acquired Filipino citizenship to obtain land and operate businesses. The report recommends initiating civil forfeiture proceedings against these individuals.
