Honda Introduces Hybrid System for Large SUVs Targeting North American Market

Tokyo: Honda Motor Co. has unveiled its innovative hybrid system specifically designed for large sport utility vehicles (SUVs), focusing on the North American market, where there is a significant demand for large vehicles and hybrid technology.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Japanese automaker plans to introduce vehicles equipped with this new hybrid system starting in 2027. The design of the system aims to balance high power output with impressive fuel efficiency while adhering to North American emissions regulations. Notably, the system’s battery is smaller than those currently available, which is expected to contribute to its efficiency.

Honda anticipates that the new hybrid system will enhance fuel efficiency by 30 percent compared to traditional gasoline vehicles. This improvement is attributed to its advanced capability to switch driving modes based on the situation. Additionally, the system possesses the capability to tow boats, expanding its utility for consumers.

In the United States, the demand for hybrid vehicles has surged following policy changes during the administration of US President Donald Trump, which revised a previous focus on electric vehicles. Currently, Honda does not offer large hybrid vehicles in the North American market, although it does sell models like the Pilot large SUV and the Ridgeline pickup truck.

Despite Honda’s commitment to transitioning its entire vehicle lineup to electric and fuel cell models by 2040, the company acknowledges the need to balance consumer convenience with environmental considerations. Kenichiro Hayashi, Honda’s vehicle development reform director, emphasized this approach in light of the current market conditions in the U.S.
