Holiday Season Sees Surge in Road Accidents, DOH Reports 414 Incidents

Manila: The number of road accidents recorded during the holiday season has climbed to 414 as of 5 a.m. on Monday, based on reports gathered by the Department of Health (DOH) from 10 sentinel hospitals. Four fatalities were reported, all involving motorcycle riders, with motorcycles accounting for 305 of the total accidents.

According to Philippines News Agency, the latest bulletin from the DOH indicated an increase of 29 additional cases since December 21. Data revealed that 58 of these incidents were linked to alcohol use, and a significant number, 343 individuals, failed to use safety accessories such as helmets or seatbelts at the time of the crash.

To prevent further accidents, the DOH issued reminders to motorists to adhere to safety measures. These include wearing DTI-approved helmets for motorcycle riders, using seatbelts for drivers and passengers, avoiding driving when tired or intoxicated, and following speed limits and road signs. The agency also recommended ensuring seven to eight hours of sleep before traveling and refraining from using mobile phones while driving.

For urgent assistance, the DOH encouraged the public to contact 911 or the 1555 DOH emergency hotline.
