Bacolod: Haze affecting some areas in the country has prompted the issuance of a public safety advisory in the Negros Island Region, including this highly urbanized city, on Tuesday. Mayor Greg Gasataya advised Bacolodnons to keep doors and windows closed, avoid strenuous activities, and wear face masks outdoors. 'This is especially critical for children, pregnant women, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions,' he said in a Facebook post.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gasataya stated that the city government is continuously monitoring the situation and tracking air quality levels through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Environmental Management Bureau - Negros Island Region (EMB-NIR) monitoring station in Barangay Alijis. He also reminded the public to dial the local 911 hotline in case of emergency.

In its air quality update as of 8 a.m., the EMB-NIR reported that 'the air quality in the region currently reaches a very unhealthy air quality index (AQI) level in La Castellana while surrounding monitored areas maintain a fair AQI status.' The EMB-NIR strictly advised sensitive groups and residents in affected areas to wear well-fitted face masks, stay indoors whenever possible, limit outdoor activities, keep food and water covered, exercise caution when traveling, and protect one's eyes.

'Stay updated. Monitor official advisories from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and your local government unit for the latest information and safety instructions,' it added. The DENR-EMB central office advisory said the air quality is currently being monitored due to haze affecting areas in the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa.

The observed haze is likely caused by smoke and transboundary haze from fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, carried into the country by the southwest monsoon winds. In a separate advisory, the Department of Health - Negros Island Region reminded public transport drivers, delivery riders, street vendors, and field workers who spend significant time outdoors to follow the guidelines and advisories regarding the haze.
