Manila: The government is rolling out new ‘climate-smart’ strategies to help the Philippines adapt to the worsening impacts of climate change, Malaca±ang said Tuesday. Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro highlighted the administration’s commitment to developing science-driven and technology-based programs aimed at strengthening the nation’s disaster resilience and food security.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has directed efforts towards implementing various initiatives, including the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Automated Furrow Irrigation System (AFIS). This system is designed to conserve water and improve crop yields through precise irrigation methods. Additionally, the Smart Farming Initiative, which utilizes soil and moisture sensors, is being employed to boost agricultural productivity across the country.
Castro further mentioned that the government is working on establishing a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) to ensure a ‘climate-smart and climate-resilient Philippines.’ This plan is complemented by the continuous investment in early warning systems and disaster preparedness technologies by the state weather bureau, enhancing the nation’s ability to respond to climate-related challenges.
The President has consistently emphasized the importance of global collaboration in addressing the climate crisis. ‘As the President often says, climate change is not a challenge one country can solve alone – it requires a united global response,’ Castro stated.
