Pinamalayan: Asia’s first Grandmaster and Hall of Famer Eugene Torre will be engaging with young chess enthusiasts in a simultaneous exhibition in Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro, during the 2nd Bahaghari Chess Cup, a FIDE-rated tournament, scheduled for November 9-10.

According to Philippines News Agency, the 2nd Bahaghari Chess Cup is organized by the Pinamalayan Chess Club, with the objective of showcasing and nurturing grassroots chess talent. Torre’s participation in the simul is set to occur on November 9 at 8 a.m. at Casa Felar on Aguinaldo Street, marking the tournament’s opening.

The event promises a competitive atmosphere with the champion set to receive PHP20,000 and a trophy. Additional cash prizes will be distributed among the top nine finishers. Mindoro players have the chance to compete in an Amateur Rapid tournament that offers separate prizes.

Registration for the tournament is currently open. Fees are set at PHP600 for non-Pinamalayan players and PHP500 for locals in the open standard categ
ory. Amateur participants can register for PHP200 if they are non-Pinamalayan players and PHP100 for locals.

Ferdinand Melaya, President of the Pinamalayan Chess Club, emphasized the tournament’s aim to cultivate young chess talent, noting the inspirational impact of Torre’s presence on young players. “Our goal is to cultivate competitive players who can represent Oriental Mindoro-and the country-on national and international stages,” he stated.

He further highlighted the academic opportunities chess can offer, mentioning that several prestigious universities provide scholarships to talented players. The inaugural Bahaghari Chess Cup took place in April 2024.
