Pasay city: Ginebra ended its longstanding struggle against the Tropang 5G, securing an 88-76 victory in Game 7 of the PBA Season 50 Commissioner's Cup finals. This triumph unfolded before a crowd of 24,617 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
According to Philippines News Agency, this victory marked Ginebra's first championship win since they overcame Bay Area in the Commissioner's Cup finals Game 7 at Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan, back in January 2023. Since that memorable win, Ginebra had faced defeats against Tropang 5G in three consecutive finals-Season 49 Commissioner's Cup, and Season 47 and Season 49 Governors' Cup.
Leading Ginebra's charge was Justin Brownlee, who was named Best Import. Brownlee contributed 30 points and 14 rebounds in the decisive game, with a significant 16 points coming in the second half, helping Ginebra overturn a 49-47 halftime deficit through a 48-29 run. Brownlee had previously scored 54 and 52 points in Games 5 and 6, respectively.
Brownlee expressed his gratitude to the fans, stating, "These fans gave us the energy to go out there and win. TNT gave us a battle, but as coach Tim kept telling us, 'this is our time.'" The victory added to Brownlee's tally, marking his seventh PBA championship.
Scottie Thompson played a pivotal role with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists, earning the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) title from the PBA Press Corps. Thompson shared his emotions, saying this MVP win was particularly emotional due to the unexpected challenges he faced.
RJ Abarrientos, the Best Player of the Conference, also made a significant contribution with 13 points, securing his first PBA title. On the opposing side, TNT was led by import Chris McCullough, who scored 28 points, while Jordan Heading and RR Pogoy added 21 and 15 points, respectively.
In the final score breakdown, Ginebra led with 88 points against TNT's 76, with quarter scores of 18-16, 40-47, 68-63, and 88-76.
