SIARGAO: A fault in a submarine cable has caused a power outage on Siargao Island, prompting local authorities to implement alternative power solutions and distribute essential supplies to residents. The Siargao Electric Cooperative announced the issue, which has persisted since December 1, and identified a fault in a 1.6-kilometer section of the submarine cable. This section is currently undergoing a thorough assessment after its retrieval from the seabed.

According to Philippines News Agency, to mitigate the impact of the power shortage, a 4.4-megawatt generator arrived from Lanao del Norte on Wednesday. The generator is scheduled for commissioning on Friday and is part of a larger 16-megawatt alternative power initiative intended to support Siargao and Bucas Grande islands during the ongoing cable repairs.

In response to the situation, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Caraga Region delivered a substantial quantity of drinking water to the affected residents of General Luna t
own. The DSWD-13 reported that 3,048 ten-liter bottles were distributed on Wednesday, with an additional 4,970 bottles delivered to the local government unit on Thursday. This assistance was provided following a request from the local government, the agency noted.
