Farmers and Fisherfolk in Caraga Receive PHP66-Million Livelihood Support

Manila: The Department of Agriculture in Caraga Region (DA-13) has disbursed PHP66 million in livelihood aid to 22 farmers and fisherfolk groups across the region. This support, aimed at enhancing economic opportunities, was announced as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to bolster agricultural activities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the assistance is provided under the Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) program, which offers modules for free-range chickens, ready-to-lay chickens, swine, and goats to the beneficiaries. This initiative seeks to empower local communities by providing them with resources to develop sustainable livelihood projects.

DA-13 Director Arlan Mangelen, who led the distribution activities, emphasized the importance of these projects in ensuring food security and delivering affordable, nutritious food to families. “LEED aims to support the efforts of the government to ensure food security and provide sufficient, affordable, and nutritious food to every family,” Mangelen stated.

Eduardo Gellamucho, chairperson of the Bio-Organic Group in the Agriculture Sector from La Paz, Agusan del Sur, expressed gratitude for the support received. He highlighted the significance of diversifying income through ventures like poultry raising, which complements traditional farming practices. Gellamucho also expressed hope that similar livelihood initiatives would reach more farmer groups and associations.

The DA-13 has identified a total of 59 LEED project modules for implementation by 2025, with more than half already distributed to beneficiaries, demonstrating the agency’s commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural development in the region.
