EU Council Approves $5.4 Billion Military Support for Ukraine

Brussels:The Council of the European Union has adopted eight decisions facilitating approximately £4.9 billion ($5.4 billion) in military support for Ukraine through the European Peace Facility (EPF).

According to Philippines News agency, the decisions allocate £4.7 billion ($5.2 billion) for partially reimbursing EU member states for military aid previously sent to Ukraine, alongside an additional £230 million for the EU Military Assistance Mission, known as EUMAM Ukraine.

This package represents a significant move towards implementing an agreement among EU member states to mobilize £6.6 billion under the facility. The agreement further includes £1 billion in new military aid and continued support for the training mission in 2027.

The recent decisions increase the total support for Ukraine under the EPF to £10.8 billion, which encompasses £9.9 billion for military aid reimbursements and £950 million for military training. In the context of Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia, which began in February 2022, these decisions underscore the EU's steadfast support for Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

Additionally, the EU has redirected £3.5 billion, generated from immobilized Russian assets, to address Ukraine's needs for ammunition, air defense, and drones. Over £1.5 billion of this funding has been used to procure military equipment directly from Ukraine's defense industry.

The EPF, established in March 2021, finances actions under the EU's common foreign and security policy aimed at preventing conflicts, preserving peace, and strengthening international security, including military and defense assistance to partner countries.
