Manila: The European Union (EU) is aiming to elevate its partnership with the Philippines by enhancing collaboration across various sectors, including maritime, good governance, cybersecurity, and trade. This intention was expressed during the 4th Philippine-EU Joint Committee Meeting held in Manila, where discussions also touched on the progress of a potential free trade agreement.
According to Philippines News Agency, the EU’s ambition is to explore ways to deepen and broaden the relationship, as stated by Niclas Kvarnström, managing director for Asia and the Pacific at the European External Action Service. Kvarnström, who co-chaired the meeting with Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Maria Theresa Lazaro, emphasized the potential for advancing the partnership to a higher level.
During the meeting, both parties acknowledged the positive trajectory of trade relations between the Philippines and the EU, with aspirations to elevate the EU’s status as the Philippines’ trading partner. Disc
ussions also included the scope of green transition projects, particularly in infrastructure and digitalization, reflecting the shared interest in sustainable development.
The bilateral meeting underscored the importance of maritime cooperation and reiterated the commitment to a rules-based order in the South China Sea. The dialogue also emphasized the EU’s focus on good governance, the rule of law, and human rights, areas where both parties have maintained a constructive exchange.
In an interview, Kvarnström highlighted the productive initial negotiations on a potential Philippines-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with both sides showing political will to conclude the agreement by 2027. He acknowledged the complexities of trade negotiations but expressed optimism about achieving the target timeline.
Kvarnström also noted improvements in governance and human rights in the Philippines, with increased government willingness to address these issues. The EU is particularly focused on supporting civil society, fr
eedom of speech, and the protection of independent voices.
The next Philippine-EU Joint Committee Meeting is scheduled to take place in Brussels next year, continuing the dialogue and collaboration between the two parties.
