Manila: Senate President Francis Escudero on Thursday defended the government’s plan to acquire US-made F-16 fighter jets, emphasizing the necessity of strengthening national defense in light of rising security concerns, particularly in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
According to Philippines News Agency, Escudero, speaking at the Kapihan sa Senado forum, explained that the proposed USD5.5 billion deal is a strategic long-term investment in the country’s defense capabilities, despite its substantial cost. He clarified that the financial outlay would be staggered over time, with the specifics of the payment terms and delivery schedule still pending finalization. The current status is merely an authorization to sell, without a finalized payment scheme or delivery timeline.
Escudero highlighted that enhancing air defense serves as a significant deterrent to potential aggression, particularly in contested regions such as the WPS. He stressed the importance of timely action, noting that with delivery expected to take four to five years, now is an opportune moment to initiate the process.
Addressing concerns about the economic impact of the deal, Escudero reassured that it would not place an immediate burden on the national budget. He emphasized the nation’s right to defend its territory as a fundamental responsibility, similar to other countries’ defense strategies. He underlined that the lack of an immediate PHP300 billion payment underscores the structured nature of the acquisition.
When questioned about the appropriateness of defense spending amid current economic challenges, Escudero asserted that national security and economic stability should not be seen as competing priorities. He maintained that both are essential for the country’s long-term stability and growth.
