Bacolod city: The Environmental Management Bureau-Negros Island Region (EMB-NIR) has launched an advanced air quality monitoring station in Bacolod City to bolster ambient air surveillance and promote public health protection within the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the station, situated in Barangay Alijis, commenced full operations on Thursday following its unveiling on Wednesday. It is equipped with the MET One BAM-1020, a sophisticated continuous particulate matter monitor. EMB-NIR OIC Regional Director Vicente Losba±es highlighted the importance of collaboration and shared commitment in preserving air quality in Bacolod. He stated that the installation of the continuous ambient air monitoring station (CAAMS) signifies a major advancement in enhancing local air quality monitoring initiatives, emphasizing the need for stakeholder cooperation, transparent data access, and community involvement.
The MET One BAM-1020 is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its ability to monitor both particulate matter (PM) 10 and PM 2.5, adhering to demanding standards for regulatory equivalence. The device utilizes beta-ray attenuation technology to accurately measure ambient particulate mass concentrations in real time, with hourly data logging capabilities that support remote data collection and long-term unattended operations.
Through the CAAMS, EMB-NIR aims to continuously monitor hazardous fine particulate matter, PM 2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers), and PM 10 (particles up to 10 micrometers). These pollutants are associated with respiratory, cardiovascular, and other health issues, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.
The new station will provide real-time data to EMB’s monitoring network, facilitating prompt responses to air quality alerts, targeted policy interventions, and stronger collaborations between local government units, agencies, and communities.
