Quezon City: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) joined the nation in honoring the contributions of women in nation-building and their indispensable roles in shaping society as the country celebrates National Women’s Month this March.

According to Philippines News Agency, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian expressed the department’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality during a video message at the agency’s flag-raising ceremony. He emphasized the importance of providing women from vulnerable and disadvantaged sectors with inclusive and gender-sensitive resources, tools, and opportunities to help them thrive.

The DSWD’s various programs and services equip countless women with skills and knowledge to aid in decision-making and foster entrepreneurship and community leadership. Gatchalian urged continued efforts towards a gender-equal and inclusive society to ensure equal opportunities for all women to contribute to a better Philippines.

This year’s celebration features the sub-theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” reinforcing the objectives of Republic Act 9710, or the Magna Carta of Women, which aims to empower women, promote gender equality, and ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities.

The DSWD has lined up activities to mark the celebration, including a Purple Parade on the first Monday of March, a Gender and Development (GAD) Advocates Prayer, and a special “Lupang Hinirang” video to be played during flag-raising and retreat ceremonies. A live press briefing focusing on National Women’s Month will be held during the DSWD’s Thursday Media Forum on March 20.

Employees are encouraged to wear purple every Wednesday and decorate their offices with purple elements to honor women’s contributions. On March 8, International Women’s Day, DSWD officials and employees are encouraged to wear clothes representing their gender expression or identity.

Additionally, a poem-making contest for employees is planned, with entries reflecting this year’s National Women’s Month sub-theme. The agency will also recognize women officials, employees, and other workers with disabilities on March 31, Women with Disability Day, highlighting their contributions to the agency and its clients.
