DPWH Initiates Technical Assessment of Collapsed Pampanga Dike

Arayat: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) began its technical assessment of the collapsed flood control project in Arayat, Pampanga. In a statement, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said engineering teams are on-site to implement urgent measures to protect affected houses and residents. He stated that the design would be overhauled to ensure a structurally sound and permanent flood control system.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dizon mentioned that they are identifying liable parties, including the contractor, DPWH personnel, and others involved. He expressed concerns about the incorrect flood control design in Barangay Candating in Arayat and noted that previous attempts to force the contractor to fix the collapsing foundations were unsuccessful. Dizon emphasized the need to hold accountable those responsible, including individuals within the DPWH, the contractor, and others linked to congressmen, with a comprehensive investigation underway.

Dizon stated that the findings would be submitted to the Office of the Ombudsman and the Department of Justice (DOJ) for prosecution. He highlighted issues with the design and insisted that the matter could not be ignored. Reports indicated that the dike collapsed again last week due to heavy rains, causing damage to several homes.

In addition, the DPWH will issue a demand letter to Newbig Four J Construction Inc., ordering immediate repairs of the collapsed river dike project along Mag-Asawang River in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro. A team of experts has been organized to assess the project and enforce permanent solutions to prevent major flooding in the surrounding towns of Naujan and Victoria. The DPWH assured the public of its commitment to speeding up the river dike's rehabilitation plan and holding those responsible for irregularities accountable as soon as possible.
