Manila: The Maharlika Highway, a critical transport artery connecting Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, will undergo a significant rehabilitation project this year at an estimated cost of PHP16 billion, as announced by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Monday.
According to Philippine News Agency, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon emphasized the importance of this project during a press conference, stating that the highway's rehabilitation is a priority for 2026. The project aims to address the deterioration due to wear and tear, which has caused inconvenience to travelers. Dizon highlighted that the Maharlika Highway is essential as it serves millions of Filipinos traveling from north to south.
Dizon announced that for the first time since its construction, the highway will undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation starting this year. The project will focus on repairing all damaged segments along its entire stretch. An inspection is scheduled from January 16 to 17 to assess the highway's current condition. Media representatives have been invited to join the road trip, particularly focusing on the Bicol region, to observe the highway's state firsthand.
The initial cost of the rehabilitation is projected at PHP16 billion, as noted by Dizon. In addition to the Maharlika Highway, the DPWH is continuing the rehabilitation of EDSA. The initial phase, specifically the bus way from Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City to Orense, Makati City, was completed ahead of schedule on January 5.
Following the EDSA project, the DPWH plans to rehabilitate the C-5 Road, which connects the cities of Pasig, Taguig, Quezon, and Las Pi±as. Dizon mentioned that the design for this rehabilitation is underway, with a target to commence within the first quarter of 2026.
