Global Surfers Converge in La Union for World Junior Championship

La union: La Union is once again making waves on the global surfing scene as it hosts the World Surf League (WSL) World Junior Championship, highlighting the province's growing reputation as a premier surfing destination in Asia. Its consistent swells, upgraded coastal facilities, and strong local support have made it a favorite among international surfers.

According to Philippine News Agency, the competition, held in San Juan, La Union, runs from Jan. 10 to 18, featuring 48 world-class young surfers from 16 countries. Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega, in a statement, confirmed that security measures and logistical preparations were completed in coordination with the local government and other stakeholders ahead of the event. This marks the third time La Union hosts a WSL international competition.

Tourism Undersecretary Maria Rica Bueno, in a video message, praised the province as a top surfing destination in the country and noted the economic benefits that events like this bring to local communities through jobs and business opportunities. WSL director Will Hayden-Smith added during a Jan. 10 press conference that aside from its waves, the warmth and hospitality of the local people make La Union a preferred venue. "La Union has incredible waves. The people are lovely and welcoming. We feel so welcome here," he said, underscoring San Juan's proven track record as a reliable host for global surfing events.

The Longboard Tour qualifying window will follow at the same venue from Jan. 20 to 26, offering four slots for the 2026 WSL Longboard Tour. Hayden-Smith said the new format aims to provide broader access and opportunities to longboarders worldwide, giving top surfers from every WSL region a chance to compete on the biggest stage.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairperson Patrick Gregorio, who heads the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee, expressed excitement over the event. "It will be a real thrill to host the world's best longboarders on the flawless waves of Monalisa Point in San Juan. La Union's strong connection to longboarding makes it the perfect competition venue," he said, adding that Filipino surfers will also have the opportunity to compete on the global stage.
