Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is undertaking the construction of 103 modern public utility vehicle (PUV) stops across the Philippines to enhance commuter safety, comfort, and convenience. Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez highlighted the lack of proper shelters during extreme weather and inadequate lighting as significant safety issues, particularly affecting students traveling at night.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lopez stated that the initiative is in response to the President's directive to make commuting safer and more comfortable for all, with a focus on seniors, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and students. "Kaya nagtatayo tayo ng karagdagang modern PUV stops sa iba pang lugar sa bansa dahil ang bilin ng Pangulo ay gawing ligtas at maginhawa ang biyahe ng mga pasahero," Lopez said.
Currently, the DOTr has completed 24 PUV stops in key areas such as Marikina, Manila, Malabon, and Quezon City in Metro Manila and in Kalibo and Malay, Aklan. Additionally, 19 more PUV stops are under construction in Muntinlupa City and Iloilo. Funding has been secured for 84 additional stops in locations including Palayan City, Science City of Mu±oz in Nueva Ecija, Zamboanga, Quezon City, Cebu City, and Mandaue City.
The modern PUV stops will be equipped with seating areas, CCTV cameras, lighting systems, concrete bollards, tactile pavement, charging stations, solar panels, and bicycle repair stations. This project is aligned with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s aim to provide safer and more comfortable waiting areas for public transportation users.
