DOT Urges Tourism Establishments to Maintain Fair Pricing During Calamities

Manila: The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Saturday called on accredited tourism establishments not to jack up prices during times of calamities. The statement came after it received reports that some businesses were overpricing and committing unfair practices amid calamity-related disruptions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOT reminded all tourism enterprises, particularly those accredited by the department, to uphold responsible, considerate, and transparent business practices during times of calamity or emergency. Accredited establishments are strongly advised not to impose unreasonable price increases for accommodation, restaurant services, or other tourism-related offerings.

In addition, the DOT encouraged tourism businesses to adopt flexible policies for booking cancellations and re-bookings, especially for guests whose travel plans were disrupted by the recent typhoons. The department emphasized the shared duty to ensure that travelers, evacuees, and responders find safety, comfort, and dignity in their establishments during times of crisis. Overpricing or denial of service in these circumstances, it noted, runs counter to the spirit of hospitality and the principles that define the Filipino brand of service.

The DOT also stated that coordination is continuous among relevant agencies to ensure that accommodation facilities adhere to fair pricing and ethical business standards. The agency is working with stakeholders on the ground to assist tourism workers affected by the recent storms that struck the country.
