The initiative follows a partnership signed last week between the DOT and Philippines Recorded Music Rights Inc. (PRM).

According to Philippines News Agency, under the memorandum of agreement, the two parties will promote lawful music use in the tourism sector and encourage accredited establishments to comply with music licensing requirements. The agreement is valid for five years, until June 1, 2031.

The initiative is in line with Republic Act 8293, or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, which protects the rights of copyright and neighboring rights holders in the public use of sound recordings and recorded performances. PRM is a registered collective management organization accredited by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines. It is authorized to collectively administer, license, and enforce the exclusive economic rights of its member sound recording producers and performers.

The DOT said the partnership also supports its 'Filipino Brand' thrust by promoting local music, culture, and artistic expressions as part of the tourism experience through licensed establishments. Earlier this year, the DOT named P-pop groups BINI and SB19 as the country's newest Tourism Ambassadors, using music to help attract foreign travelers. The music labels representing the two groups are also PRM members.
