Cagayan de oro: The Department of Health (DOH) 10 (Northern Mindanao) has intensified its monitoring efforts for hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in the region. In a “Konsultayo” briefing, Dr. Maryanne Sharlene Isidro, head of communications and health education promotions for DOH-10, highlighted an upward trend in HFMD cases, notably during the months of June, July, and August.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Isidro suggested that the return of children to school following their summer vacation may have led to increased exposure to the virus responsible for HFMD. While the disease predominantly affects children under the age of five, older children and adults remain susceptible to infection.

The issue was further emphasized by the city’s 2nd District Councilor, Dr. Paolo Nicolo Gaane, who reported HFMD cases from a private school. “On Sept. 11, the administration of St. Mary’s School in Barangay Macasandig confirmed eight cases of HFMD,” he stated.

Both Councilor Gaane and DOH-10 have urged the public to adhere to stringent health protocols, with an emphasis on regular handwashing, to curb the spread of HFMD.
