DOF Endorses $20-Million UAE Grant for Pasig River Restoration

Manila:The Department of Finance (DOF) has endorsed a proposed USD20-million grant from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Office of the President. The grant aims to support the Pasig River Restoration Project, seeking authority to negotiate an agreement for its implementation.

According to Philippines News Agency, the proposed assistance will target a 25 percent reduction in plastic and organic waste entering the Pasig River system over five years. The project includes waste recovery and interception, household waste segregation and collection, capacity-building for informal waste collectors, improved waste processing, and stronger enforcement against illegal dumping.

The DOF is tasked with negotiating the proposed agreement's terms and conditions, as grants do not require repayment. Finance Secretary Frederick Go expressed gratitude to the UAE government for its partnership in the project, which aligns with the Marcos administration's commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation.

If authorization is granted, the DOF will coordinate with the UAE Government and other relevant agencies to facilitate the project's progress.
