Discount Beep Cards Introduced for Metro Manila Students

Manila: Students in Metro Manila will soon benefit from personalized white Beep cards that automatically apply a 50 percent fare discount on train journeys starting in September. This initiative aims to streamline the travel experience for students using the city’s rail networks.

According to Philippines News Agency, during a recent inspection at the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) Antipolo Station, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced that the measure will eliminate the need for students to queue for discounted fares. Dizon stated that these Beep cards will be compatible with the LRT-1, LRT-2, and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. emphasized the importance of ensuring students have a fast and convenient commute, Dizon confirmed. The personalized Beep cards will be valid for one year and will be linked to the users, making the renewal process straightforward at the start of each school year.

Currently, similar white Beep cards are available for seniors and persons with disabilities. The distribution process for these student cards is set to accelerate, reducing the current five to seven-day processing time.

In a move to further simplify the process, Dizon revealed that students will no longer need to fill out forms to access the discounted fare. The change comes as part of a digitalization initiative in partnership with the Commission on Audit (COA), with COA Chair Gamaliel Cordoba supporting the modernization efforts.

Additionally, to address card shortages, 300,000 regular Beep cards will be released next week. Dizon also issued a warning to scalpers, noting that the authorities are working with the Philippine National Police and Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation to prevent the illegal resale of these cards.
