Manila: The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Wednesday urged local government units (LGUs) to strengthen preparations for the potential effects of Typhoon Marce, internationally known as Yinxing, expected to impact Northern Luzon. The call to action emphasizes readiness and proactive measures to mitigate the typhoon’s impact.

According to Philippines News Agency, DILG Undersecretary Serafin Barreto Jr. highlighted the importance for LGUs to prepare and ensure that evacuation centers are ready. The DILG’s attached agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), have been directed to remain on standby for potential deployment in affected areas.

Barreto noted that firefighters from the BFP and jail personnel from the BJMP are actively collaborating with LGUs in the stock-piling of relief goods. Additionally, a recent DILG memorandum advised LGUs to convene their Local Disaster Risk Reduction a
nd Management Councils (LDRRMCs) to conduct pre-disaster risk assessments focusing on floods, flash floods, rain-induced landslides, and other hydrometeorological hazards.

The DILG has also encouraged the establishment of drop-off zones to ensure an orderly and systematic distribution of relief goods. LGUs are reminded to lead efforts in declogging and cleaning waterways and drainage systems to reduce the risk of flooding in areas vulnerable to such hazards, particularly following recent typhoons.

Barreto further outlined that clearing key roads is essential to facilitate the quick and efficient delivery of relief goods and assistance. The DILG reiterated the need for LGUs to implement critical preparedness actions in line with the Operation L!sto protocols, which are designed to improve disaster readiness using a whole-of-government approach.
